CLIFTON FORGE — STARS (Special Theatrical Artists Revue and Show-case) will perform its last concert of the 20th performance season at the Clifton Middle School’s Gleason Forum Hall Saturday, Dec. 13, at 7 p. m.
Marcia Smith will assist Director Carolyn Nicely in “A Star Is Born,” a musical variety concert featuring performers who face mental or physical challenges. Maureen Stec is assisting with the publicity for STARS.
The troupe of performers was featured in “STARS,” a documentary film that won a national award for documentary excellence, a Bronze Telly.
STARS was founded by Appalfolks of America Association as an out reach program to perform in the Stonewall Theatre that was owned and operated by Appalfolks for 12 years before the non-profit organization donated the theater to the town of Clifton Forge in 2003 in exchange for a contract that provides Appalfolks with an office and the right to perform six to 16 shows in the theater per year.
Ray Allen, founder and president of Appalfolks, remarked: “We have continued to stage performances by STARS despite the fact that the theater was closed in 2010 for renovations that were projected to be completed by 2011.”
The theater renovations by the Masonic Theatre Preservation Foundation have taken longer than anticipated and Appalfolks has its equipment stored in the former Clifton Forge Armory while the organization waits to move back into the theater upon completion of the restoration project, Allen said.
There will be no advance sale of tickets for the Saturday concert. They will be sold at the door for $5. Doors open at 6:30 p. m.
“STARS has warmed the hearts of many here in the Alleghany Highlands,” Allen said.
