Covington’s girls came out firing Tuesday night.
Freshman Lauren Gillespie scored 15 of her team-high 20 points in the first quarter, vaulting the Cougars past Highland County 77-36.
Gillespie netted four treys in the first eight minutes, while Ambria Moore had seven of her 15.
“We wanted to start quickly,” said Cougar coach Mark Pifer. “Lauren got us going and everybody jumped in.”
Eight different Covington players scored just four nights after putting up only 19 in a loss at Parry McCluer.
“Thursday night was embarrassing, but it was good that the girls came back tonight and played hard,” Pifer added. “We had a good couple days of practice.
We have a young bunch, but we’re growing up together.”
Kayla Campbell added 17 for the winners, Moore had nine rebounds to go with her 15 points, while Kiesha Forbes also hit double figures with 10.
Lakin Tucker just missed being a fifth in double digits with nine.
Gillespie handed out seven assists from her point guard spot.
“She’s getting better,” Pifer said. “We got a lot of contributions from a lot of different girls tonight. It was a nice win.”
Chelsey Isles led Highland County with 20 points.
The Cougars (3-1 Pioneer, 3-9 overall) continue a six-game homestand tonight with William Byrd and Friday against Bath County.
