LOW MOOR — Mary Jane Mutispaugh has been named acting superintendent of Alleghany County schools, effective Jan. 2.
Mutispaugh currently serves as director of instruction for the school divison. She has been employed by Alleghany County schools since August 2001.
The school board named Mutispaugh acting superintendent Monday night following a closed session to discuss personnel issues.
She will become acting superintendent following the retirement of Dr. Sarah Campbell Jan. 1. The school board will begin its search for a permanent superintendent in January.
Prior to joining Alleghany County schools in 2001, Mutispaugh was principal of Parry McCluer Middle School in Buena Vista. She also served as principal of Lylburn Downing Middle School in Lexington from 1994-1997.
Before she became an administrator, Mutispaugh was a teacher for 15 years. She was chairwoman of the Social Studies Department at Parry McCluer High School from 1988-1994. She also worked for the Rockbridge County school system for six years. She taught Social Studies for four years at Naural Bridge High School and math for two years at Brownsburg Middle School.
Mutispaugh graduated from Lexington High School in 1975 and received a bachelor of arts dedgree in social studies from James Madison University in Harrisonburg in 1979. In 1987, she earned a master’s degree in education from JMU.
Asa director of instruction for Alleghany County schools, Mutispaugh has provided oversight of regular education instructional programs and curriculum development.
