Nellie Null Montgomery Redman, 85, of Covington, VA passed on to Glory, January 11, 2015, in Bridgeport, WV.

Nellie, daughter of the late Thomas Blair Montgomery and Bertie Mae Lowen Montgomery, was born on January 1, 1930 and was raised in Mallow, VA.  Known by many as “Nanny,” she passed away early Sunday morning after losing her sight in 2009 and recently developing Alzheimer’s.

She was preceded in death by her only love, Stanley Eugene Redman, who passed away in 1977.  Nellie was from a large family—the sister of six brothers and six sisters. Preceding in her death were her brothers James, Jack, Thomas, Pete, and Rodney Montgomery and her sisters Josephine Redman, Annabelle Vestyck, Francis Paitsel, and Lily Gray May. Her brother, Robert Montgomery, and her sisters, Mary Dodd and Patty Plymale, survive her.

She leaves behind her oldest daughter, Linda Jean Redman and her fiancé Jake Messenger, and a loving care-taker, her youngest daughter, Lynnell Redman, all of Salem, WV.  Two grandchildren, Candice Anastasia Redman, who was affectionally known as “Candy,” and Gregory Allen Holestin, Jr., who was her “Charlie Brown” and his wife Kristin Elaine Holestin.  Also surviving are five great-grand children: Simone Swain, Asharia Matthews, Reagan, Jacob and Logan Holestin.

Nellie was an inspiration to those who knew her and was loved by all. Her life was devoted to taking care of others; as their house-keeper, a sitter for the sick, or giving away her meager possessions to those who needed them most in selfless love.  She will be forever known for her canny sayings—“kiss my grits” or “sweep out your own backdoor”—but most importantly when speaking about death that she was “heading to Glory!”  In recent years she found comfort in singing old hymns such as “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “Blessed Assurance” daily.

In lieu of flowers or charitable donations, the family requests that you do something special for someone else today.  Make a memory and share a special moment with someone you haven’t seen recently.  A private memorial service will be held in the Spring for the family and close friends.
