ROANOKE  — Kameron Warlitner wrestled to the title at 145 pounds, leading Alleghany to a fourth place finish at the Knights of the Round Table tournament Saturday at Cave Spring.

Warlitner was one of nine Mountaineers who placed and he joined John Reed and C.J. Chittum in title matches.

“This was Kameron’s most complete tournament to date,” said Alleghany coach Dale Burdette. “Not only was he winning, he was picking up big bonus points with pins. McKenzie was a state place winner in 2A last year, but Kameron’s offseason work really showed itself in that championship match.”

Reed lost a 3-1 decision to Cave Spring’s Josh Baier, a former state champion, while Chittum lost to last year’s state runner-up Elijah Seay of Staunton River by pin.

“John and Baier went back and forth with each other and John was close to finishing a few takedowns that would have changed the match,” Burdette said. “C.J. continues to wrestle well. He just ran into a buzzsaw in Seay.”

Burdette was pleased with his shorthanded team.

“With three starters out due to injury or illness, we only had nine scoring wrestlers,” he said. “Considering that, fourth place was a great achievement and says a lot about the guys out there competing.”

Vail continued his good work at 195, while both Zach Rusmisel and Cameron Hyler placed at 220.

“Peyton has three losses on the year in three tournaments, all at the hands of the Salem kid,” Burdette added. “He’s getting closer to getting him, and he’ll have another chance at the Alleghany Duals. Cameron and Zach are both undersized at 220, both could make 195. But they both seem to find their way onto the podium.”
