In every sense of the word, Horton Beirne was a community leader.
Whether it was his work at the newspaper, his latest book on the history of the Alleghany Highlands, his efforts with the Covington-Hot Springs Rotary Club or the Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother program or his caring for his beloved Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Horton kept his hand on the pulse of the Highlands community.
Horton lost a long battle with COPD over the weekend. He was admitted to the hospital on Christmas Eve and died there under hospice care Saturday.
He leaves behind a wonderful family that includes his wife, Mary Ann, daughters Joy and Elizabeth, son HP and granddaughters Sydney and Itzi.
Horton Beirne may be gone, but he won’t soon be forgotten. The imprint he left on the Alleghany Highlands will last for years to come.
