COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - The Covington Lumberjacks and Olde Town Covington have joined forces with the Christmas Mother and Salvation Army for a teddy bear drive. Teddy Bear Donations to Be Collected at Saturday’s Game

COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — The Covington VA250 Celebration opened Thursday evening at the Jackson River Sports Complex. Crowds began lining up before gates opened at 6 p.m. and quickly filled the midway. Rides provided by Coles Amusements drew steady lines throughout the evening, while food vendors served a variety of fair favorites.
The celebration continues Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 6 p.m. each day and admission is free. Ride tickets are available for purchase on site. The event concludes Saturday night with a fireworks show. Photo: Christopher Mentz, VR

Mr. Richard Allen Ayers, age 66, of Covington, died Friday morning, December 12, 2014, at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem, VA.  He was the husband of Carol Laudermilk Ayers.
Mr. Ayers was born January 19, 1948 in Summersville, WV, the son of the late Edward Baker Ayers and Bertha Enloe Ayers. In addition to his wife of forty-four years, Carol Laudermilk Ayers, Mr. Ayers is survived by a daughter, Gina Ayers Tingler and husband, Harry of Covington; two grandchildren, Kelley Tingler and Adam Tingler; one brother, Don Ayers of Ward, AR; and two sisters, Dessie  Baker of Summersville, WV and Sue Hunter of Laurel, MD, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Edward Baker and Bertha Enloe Ayers, Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by two brothers, John Ayers and Robert Ayers.
Rick was a graduate of Nicholas County High School, Class of 1965.  He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force where he was stationed in the Philippines.  A resident of this community since 1970, Mr. Ayers was employed as an office manager for forty years by Hammond Mitchell, Inc.  He was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served on the session.  Rick was a longtime member of the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce and was Chairman of the Chamber Classic Golf Tournament for many years.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed all sports that involved his grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Michael C. Fleenor officiating. 

Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park
Pallbearers will be Greg Vess, Jeff Patterson, Ray Lipes, Ed Gibson, John Mitchell, Blair Mitchell, Dallas Bates, Brandon Rowan and Mike Middleton.
Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Varner.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
