GREENVILLE — Murray McClung scored a game-high 11 points, including three 3-pointers, Friday night to lead the Alleghany Mountaineers to a 47-38 win over Riverheads in the Augusta County Tip-Off Tournament at Riverheads High School.

Rachel Hepler came off the bench to add eight, while Laurel Burdette also scored eight for the Mountaineers, who managed a split in the two-game affair.

The Mountaineers dropped a 69-60 decision to Stuarts Draft in their Wednesday opener.

The Mountaineers built a 19-6 lead after one against the host Gladiators Friday and increased that advantage to 29-15 at the half.

“Murray McClung was a good choice to start,” said Alleghany coach Danny Keene. “She hit three 3s in the first half, and she played really well the whole game.”
Keene also praised the performance of Hepler.

“Rachel Hepler came off the bench and did a good job for us,” Keene added.

Blake Bartley led the Gladiators with 11 points, while Morgan Bond had 10.

In Wednesday’s affair, the Mountaineers couldn’t dig out of an early hole.

The Cougars raced to a 24-8 lead after one quarter, and the Mountaineers were forced to play catch-up the rest of the night.

They managed to cut their deficit to 41-30 at the half, but Stuarts Draft increased their lead to 57-43 after three quarters.

Elaina Fridley scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Mountaineers, while La’Tisha Chambers had 11.

Danielle Brenneman’s 13 points led Stuarts Draft.

The Mountaineers host James River Monday.
