Mrs. Nellie Mae Canterbury Baker, age 100, formerly of Covington, died Sunday, August 5, 2012, at Brandon Oaks, Roanoke.
She was the wife of the late Edwin Curry Baker.
Mrs. Baker was born April 16, 1912 in Union, W.Va., the daughter of the late Henry Lewis Canterbury and Clarinda Baldwin Canterbury.
A resident of this community since 1937, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Baker was a former member of Temple Baptist Church, the Hope Bible Class, the Polly Van Lear Circle and various other committees and activities in the church and community. She was a former Sunday school teacher and enrolling clerk at Temple Baptist Church for seventeen years. Mrs. Baker is presently a member of Cave Springs Baptist Church and Fidelis Senior Women’s Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Baker is survived by one daughter, Nancy B. Puckett and husband, James of Roanoke, one sister, Grace C. Young of Connorsville, Ind.; one son-in-law, David Paxton; five grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Henry Lewis Canterbury and Clarinda Baldwin Canterbury and her husband of 61 years, Edwin Curry Baker, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by one daughter, Clarinda B. Paxton; six brothers; and four sisters.
A funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m. Wednesday, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. William “Bill” Hartsfield officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Michael Puckett, Kevin Puckett, Donald Halterman, Pete Griffith, John Stone, Curly Smith and Francis Williams.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday morning from 11 a.m. until service time at Loving Funeral Home.
