Betty Jean Persinger Breedlove, 84, of Roanoke, Va., went to her Heavenly home on Thursday, September 6, 2018, surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and Edith Lowman Persinger; and her beloved Rottweiler, Max.
Betty is survived by her husband of 60 years, Frank D. Breedlove; her daughter, Linda Breedlove of Chicago, Ill.; her daughter and son-in-law, Donna Breedlove and David Priestley of Prosper, Texas; her son and daughter-in-law, Brian Breedlove and Marti Zehr-Breedlove of Frisco, Texas; her adoring grandchildren, Alexandra Breedlove-Priestley and Logan Breedlove Priestley, both of Prosper, Texas; her sister, Barbara Jones of Danville, Va.; her brother, Curtis Persinger of Clifton Forge, Va.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She graduated from Covington High School in Covington, Va., and earned a BS degree in Elementary Education from Longwood College. Betty raised three children and educated thousands in her 33 years of teaching in Roanoke City at Huff Lane, Westside and Fairview in the gifted education program. She was a member of the Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and of the Roanoke City Retired Teachers’ Group.
Betty loved gardening, antiquing, a funny story and a good game of Rook. Above all, she loved her family, neighbors, fellow teachers, and friends including the “Hollowell Gang.” Betty was most passionate about her grandchildren and loved spoiling them rotten. She fought with everything she had for any extra time with loved ones and put their welfare ahead of her own until her last breath.
Friends universally describe her as kind, loving, selfless and a blessing to everyone in her path. In celebration of her life, please thank a teacher, help a neighbor and hug your loved ones.
Her family wishes to thank friends and neighbors too numerous to list for their love and support with special appreciation to Tina Cannon, Delonnia and Jeff King and the nursing staff at Carilion.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 10, 2018, at Oakey’s South Chapel at 4257 Brambleton Avenue, Roanoke, Va., 540-989-3131.

A private graveside service will take place on Tuesday, September 11, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be expressed at www.oakeys.com.
