‘Angels Among Us’

That was the theme for 2018 as the eighth annual Cancer Cupcake Tree ceremony was held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21, at Lewis-Gale Hospital Alleghany.

LOW MOOR — “Angels Among Us.”
That was the theme for 2018 as the eighth annual Cancer Cupcake Tree ceremony was held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21, at Lewis-Gale Hospital Alleghany.
The tree included 249 names of individuals who have battled cancer, and the ceremony coincided with September’s designation as Childhood Cancer Aware-ness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Sunday’s ceremony honored Emily Byer, a nine-year-old who has battled Ewing’s Sarcoma.
“Emily has shown us what strength and hope is when you are faced with a battle against cancer in her endeavor to fight that ugly ‘C’ word,”?said Marilyn Bailey, an organizer of the Cancer Cupcake Tree. “It is a great honor for us to have her and her family here today.”
Musical selections were provided by Kim Cahoon and John Ryan.
The Rev. Bill Gilliland of First Christian Church read the names “In Memory Of,”?while the Rev. Billy Price from Faith Baptist Church, a cancer survivor, read the names “In Honor Of.”
Mrs. Bailey and Priscilla Redman started the Cancer Center Fund in December 2009.
“We had a bake sale, but the money didn’t go very far,”?Mrs. Bailey recalled. She then came up with the idea of the Cancer Cupcake Tree.
“It is with your support that we are able to do what we do all year,”?Mrs. Bailey said. “With each cupcake that you have bought, the money stays here in our local Cancer Center.”
She explained that money raised from the Cancer Cupcake Tree is used to purchase drinks, water, En-sure, chips, nabs, cakes “and whatever else they need to make their visit to the center more pleasant.” “That was our purpose to help our local patients and caregivers,”?she added.
Mrs. Bailey recognized several individuals for their efforts. She and Beverly Ervin Pack visit the center each week to make sure that water, drinks and snacks are thoroughly stocked, while Drema Tyree and Renee Bethel frequently visit Sam’s Club for supplies.
A&B Bakery has provided refreshments at the Cancer Cupcake Tree ceremony each year, while John Ryan mans the sound system.

Mrs. Bailey thanked Kim Cahoon for her musical selection and Alisa Hayslett for snapping photos. She also thanked the Rev. Gilliland and the Rev. Price for their efforts. She recognized Temple Baptist Church and the Club Car for furnishing food weekly. She also thanked Epworth Church for contributing food and Coving-ton Bible Church for the Encouragement Bags.
“These are your trees, and you are helping our local Cancer Center more than you know,”?Mrs. Bailey concluded.

Following are the list of names that were read at Sunday’s Cancer Cupcake Tree ceremony.
