WAYSIDE, W.Va. — Sgt. James Lee Bowen, 90, of Wayside, W.Va. went home to be with the Lord Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, following a short illness.
Born Jan. 23, 1928, at Alleghany County, he was the son of the late George H. and Anna Marie Davis Bowen.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict as a military police officer until his retirement after almost 21 years of service.
After retirement he then worked as a correctional officer in Iowa, Virginia and West Virginia, attended the War Ridge Freewill Baptist Church for the last 15 years, his hobby and passion was raising different breeds of exotic birds, but he most of all loved spending time with his family and friends.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Lula Wright Bowen of Wayside, W.Va.; five daughters, Pamela Bowen Tucker of Clifton Forge, Terry Lee Bowen and husband Robert Shahan of Covington, Libby Jean Day of Roanoke, Sue Bush and husband Jay of Covington and Zettia Fizer and husband Buster of Florida; one son, Jonah Lee Bowen and fiancée Stacy King of Frankford, W.Va.; grandchildren, Dixie, Wilsonia, Clara, April, Krystal, Travis, Britney, Samantha, Sarah, Misty and Frank, 26 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Kelly and husband Melvin of Brunswick, Ga.; a very special niece, Juanita Bowen Wolf of Covington; several nieces and nephews; and his special companion his beloved dog, Bell.
James loved all his family the same they were all considered his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Solid Rock Ministry Church, 610 South Alleghany Avenue, Covington, with Pastor Pam Irvine officiating.
After the memorial service, there will be a gathering of family and friends at the Fudge Street Café Banquet Room at 109 Fudge St., Covington, where lunch will be provided.
A Celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the War Ridge Freewill Baptist Church with Brother Tim Fox, the Rev. Joe Sweeney and Brother Danny Michael officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations of sympathy may be made to his wife.
