Marjorie “Marge” Deaton Traub, age 91, passed away July 12, 2017 At Green Ridge Village Retirement Community in Newville, PA.
She was born Marjorie Ellen on February 16, 1926 to George and Lillian Deaton of Clifton Forge, VA.
She was the third of what would be 8 children. She recalled her early years fondly in spite of growing up during the Great Depression. The family lost the house her father built for her mother and moved to another property he owned on the side of a large hill. One of her most cherished memories occurred during a polio epidemic quarantine. Using found wood and roller skate wheels, she and her siblings built a roller coaster from the top of the hill to the bottom. They had a ball flying down that hill!
After graduating from Clifton Forge High School in 1943, She attended the Southern School of Printing in Nashville, Tennessee where she trained as a linotype operator, which at the time was a strictly male profession. After completing her training, she worked on the Clifton Forge Daily Review where she met her future husband, Mike Traub. They married on May 7, 1948 and began married life in Covington and Lynchburg, finally settling in Richmond.
Shortly after moving to Richmond, Marge and Mike renewed and rededicated their lives to Jesus at a Billy Graham Crusade. Her Christian faith was the linchpin of Marge’s life. Her motto was “the joy of the Lord is my strength.”
Marge worked many years in the printing business and after retiring, due to her love of children, became a nanny, caring for several children from birth to school age.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kerry Callihan and Randy Hurd of Tracy, CA; also by her son Rev. George Traub and wife Charlotte of Dillsburg, PA, and grandsons Ryan and Alex. Surviving siblings are Eleanor Bruffey of Clifton Forge, VA and George Deaton of Raleigh, NC.
She was laid to rest next to her husband Mike on Monday July 17th at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Richmond, Virginia. A celebration of her life will be planned at a later date.
