NARROWS — Sean Flenner got it done at the free throw line in the fourth quarter here Monday night.
The Bath County junior canned 14-of-16 at the stripe, all in the final period, as the sixth-seeded Chargers knocked off No. 3 Narrows, 71-55, in the opening round of the Pioneer District boys basketball tournament.
The brother duo of Sean and Damian Flenner both went for 18 points for the winners, Sean Gardener added 13 and Cole Plott scored 11.
Patrick Chestnut had six, Kemar Archer had three and Wyatt Harmon added two for BCHS.
The victory not only earned the Chargers (8-12) a 6 p.m. date at No. 2 seed Covington in a district semifinal on Wednesday, but also assured them a berth in the Region C tournament next week.
Bath County led 29-21 at the half and stretched the lead to 10, 46-36, after three quarters.
“That’s the best we’ve played all season,” said BCHS?first-year coach Justin Whittington, whose team avenged two regular season losses to Narrows.
“We made a couple defensive adjustments that kind of took them out of their offense,” he continued. “We got them in some foul trouble and in the fourth quarter we just kept driving the ball at them and it was one of those nights when we were getting the calls.
“Sean did a great job knocking down his free throws in the fourth quarter.”
Gavin Fletcher led the Green Wave with 13 points, while Issac Taylor added 12.
Narrows’ season ended with a 9-10 record.
Monday’s other Pioneer first round game also saw the road team win.
Eastern Montgomery, the tournament’s No. 5 seed, went to New Castle and upended No. 4 seed Craig County, 43-34.
The Mustangs will travel to top-seed Parry McCluer on Wednesday for a semifinal.
Both the tournament championship and consolation games are scheduled for Thursday night, with the highest seed hosting each contest.
