SELMA — The Alleghany Retired Teachers’ Association met Tuesday, March 5, at Epworth United Methodist Church.
President Becky Smith welcomed everyone and thanked them for their donations of food and money to the Clifton Forge Area Food Pantry the COPE Food Pantry in Covington, and Central United Methodist Church Food Pantry.
Smith also thanked everyone for their hard work during the year which has led to the success of the ARTA.
The guest speaker was State?Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-Hot Springs). The topic of Deeds discussion was “Schools and the Legislature.” Sen. Deeds also touched on the progress that the legislature had made on mental illness.
Smith read the poem “Teaching Dreams” by Cecil W. Morris. Brenda and Dewey Lawson presented the scholarships to Brandon Seay from Covington High School, and Jack Silver and Justin Clarke, both from Alleghany High School.
Smith asked everyone to meet and talk to the scholarship recipients and their parents and guests.
Vice President Joan Green read some thank you letters and gave the announcement on the forms for the Community Service report hours that were due.
She stated she had extra forms available if anyone needed one.
Treasurer Karen Brown submitted the minutes which were amended and approved as corrected.
Smith thanked the United Methodist Women for fixing the hot dogs and the Hospitality Committee for the rest of the meal.
The Rev.?Jonathan Greer, pastor at?Epworth United Methodist, gave the blessing.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 7, starting at 10:45 a.m. at Mountain View Restaurant. All school personnel are invited to the meeting.
