CHRISTIANSBURG — Alleghany’s Olivia Bryant and David Donnan extended their swim seasons Tuesday night.
Bryant finished fourth in both the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke, while Donnan had a fifth place finish in the 100 yard butterfly at the Class 3, Region D championship meet at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Both qualified for the Class 3 state meet on February 16 at the SwimRVA Aquatic Center in Richmond.
“To have swimmers place in the top 10, and to have two going to state is a huge accomplishment for our team,” said Lee Anne Bowling-Angle, in her eighth season in charge of the Mountaineer swim program. “(Assistant Coach) Madison (Carter) and I are very proud of our swimmers and this meet proves how hard they work every week.”
Bryant, a senior, became Alleghany’s first two-time, two-event state qualifier.
She swam a 26.97 personal record in the 50 free and followed that up by shaving nearly three seconds off her PR in the 100 back with a time of 1:06.38.
Bryant placed 14th at the state meet in the 100 back last year.
Donnan, a junior, also clocked a PR to earn his state berth.
Swimming the 100 butterfly, Donnan cut a second off his best time with a 1:03.16.
Other top 10 efforts for Alleghany included:
• Donnan: 8th, 50 freestyle;
• Julia Bryant: 7th, 200 freestyle; 8th, 100 freestyle;
• Macie Miller: 8th, 200 individual medley;
• Abby Martin: 9th, 50 freestyle; 9th,100 freestyle;
• Keely Lowman: 9th, 500 freestyle;
• Kiersten Smith: 9th, 100 breaststroke;
• 200 Freestyle Relay: 6th (Abby Martin, Kiersten Smith, Julia Bryant, Olivia Bryant).
“We had the best meet of the season,” Bowling-Angle added. “The meet was full of PRs for the team. This is exactly how we hope to end every season. Our team has very strong competition at this level going up against club swimmers who swim year round.”
