LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Carnegie Hall will present the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra this Sunday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. in the Hamilton Auditorium as it continues its 2018/2019 Mainstage Season.
The afternoon performance is under the direction of Maestro Lawrence Loh and features harpist Emily Levin.
The repertoire will include Rossini’s Italian in Algiers Overture, Ginastera’s Harp Concerto, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4.
Lawrence Loh is 10th music director of the West Virginia Symphony, having been awarded the position starting in the 2017-2018 season.
He is also currently the Music Director of Symphoria (Syracuse, N.Y.).
Loh’s previous positions include music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic; artistic director and principal conductor of the Syracuse Opera; resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; music director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra; associate conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; associate conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra; and music director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra.
Loh is active as a guest conductor, both in the U.S. and abroad, including engagements with the Boston Pops (Tanglewood); Seattle Symphony; Buffalo Philharmonic; and the Cathedral Choral Society at the Washington National Cathedral. In the summer of 2016, he made his debut at Tanglewood, conducting Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 with the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Orchestra.
Loh received his artist diploma in Orchestral Conducting from Yale, his master’s in choral conducting from Indiana University, and his BA and certificate of management studies, from the University of Rochester. Born in southern California of Korean parentage and raised in Carlisle, Pa., Loh and his wife Jennifer have a son, Charlie, and a daughter, Hilary.
Emily Levin, astral artist, is the principal harpist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and bronze medal winner of the ninth USA International Harp Competition. She will be featured on Alberto Ginastera’s “Harp concerto, Op 25.”
The Jerusalem Post praised her playing for its “communicative, emotionally intense expression,” while the Herald Times commended her “technical wizardry and artistic intuition.”
Also, prior to the performance, join concert-goers in Carnegie Hall’s Old Stone Room for its Mainstage Lounge experience. Enjoy food and drink while mingling with friends before the show.
The Mainstage Lounge opens at 6:30 p.m and is hosted by the Carnegie Hall Foundation. Admission to the lounge is $10 per person and may be purchased as part of your performance ticket order or at the door.
