WAYNESBORO, Va. (VR) — The Covington Lumberjacks answered every challenge Wednesday night, using a four-RBI performance from Darrius Brown to secure a 7-5 victory over the Waynesboro Generals.
Covington jumped in front early and never trailed, building a 5-2 lead before Waynesboro rallied to tie the game in the seventh inning. The Lumberjacks responded in the eighth inning with two runs to reclaim the lead and close out the win.
Brown opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run, giving Covington a 1-0 advantage. The Lumberjacks added another run in the second when Dariel Castillo doubled home Jacob Levesque.
The Generals tied the game in the third inning with two runs, but Covington regained control in the fourth. Brown delivered a two-run double that scored Castillo and Frankie Clark, then scored on Emory Stephens’ sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-2.
Waynesboro battled back in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to tie the game at 5-5.
Covington answered in the eighth. Brown drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Jose Alfonso, and Jonathan Vazquez followed with a bases-loaded walk to score Levesque, putting the Lumberjacks back ahead 7-5.
The Jacks finished with 11 hits, led by Brown and Levesque with two hits each. Brown finished 2-for-3 with a home run, double, four RBIs, two walks and two runs scored. Castillo went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Vazquez added a hit, an RBI and two walks, while Stephens recorded a hit, an RBI and a sacrifice fly. Levesque scored twice and finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
On the mound, Jesus Gonzalez earned the start and worked five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Enzo Gurgel followed with three innings of relief, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out two.
Covington finished the night with seven runs on 11 hits and four errors. Waynesboro recorded five runs on seven hits with two errors.
