Rodney Desmond “Beany” Holloway, originally from Covington, was selected to serve in the honor guard for Stage III of President George H.W. Bush’s state funeral in Houston, Texas, on Dec. 5-6.
Holloway, 21, is the son of Rodney Holloway of Cov-ington and Michelle Tillman of Salem and the grandson of Evangeline and the late Lee Wayne Holloway of Covington and Kathy and the late Donald Tucker of Salem.
He is a 2016 graduate of Covington High School, a March 2018 graduate of U.S. Navy basic training and a June 2018 graduate of “initial training which marks the completion of a rigorous period that culminates in a sailor earning the title of Guardsman in the elite United States Navy Ceremonial Guard.”
Holloway has “worked countless hours on learning the fundamentals of uniform preparation, drill manual-of-arms, marching proficiency and physical fitness to achieve this honor.”
Holloway is currently stationed in Washington, D.C., where he “wears the cloth of his nation and renders funeral honors to our fallen heroes at hallowed Arlington National Cemetery.”
Over the next two years, he will “participate in high-profile ceremonies in support of the President, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chief of Naval Operations and Commandant, Naval District Washington.”
Bush, the 41st president of the United States, died Nov. 30 at his home in Houston, Texas, at the age of 94.
