HOT SPRINGS — It was quite the turnaround.
Bath County’s girls were hammered by 41, 69-28, less than three weeks ago in New Castle.
Thursday night, the result was much different.
Gabrie Herscher led three Chargers into double figures with 18 in Bath’s 57-43 Pioneer District win over Craig County.
“My girls did it,” said BCHS?coach Adam Frye of the Thursday win. “I can’t take credit. They worked their butts off.”
Bath County switched up their defense this week, playing almost exclusive man-to-man.
The result?
Back-to-back district wins over Highland County and Craig.
“We forced their best shooters to have to constantly get loose,” Frye added. “The girls have been working hard. That’s just a commitment from my Lady Chargers. Our defense is going to carry us and that’s the story of this game tonight.”
Craig County scored 22 of their 43 points in the second quarter and led 28-24 at the half.
But Selena Wolfe scored 10 of her career-high 16 points after the break as the Chargers outscored their guests 33-15.
Kassedi Estes added 10 points for the winners, while Emily Douglas scored eight, all in the second half.
“We were really able to get some genuine post play — Selena, Emily, Joley McLain, Alicia Schwallenberg,” Frye said. “Also a shout out to Faith Nichols, she’s my most inexperienced player. I was proud of her for stepping up. We’ve got some real fighters on this team, I couldn’t be anymore pleased.”
Autumn Hutchison scored 20 for Craig County, while Kaylee Pauley added 10.
Bath County (2-5 Pioneer, 5-10 overall) has a big three-game week next week — Monday at Parry McCluer, Wednesday at home against Covington and Friday at home against Eastern Montgomery.
The Rockets were a 40-18 junior varsity winner Thursday.
Sara Jones led Craig County with 12 points.
Chaya Offer scored eight for the Chargers, Olivia Clarkson and Malia Whittington had four each, while Alex Micko and Hope May added two apiece.
