The Covington Lumberjacks will open their 2019 Valley League Baseball schedule on Friday, May 31, in Waynesboro.
The VBL officially approved its 2019 slate at a league meeting Thursday night.
The schedule again features a 42-game regular season slate for each team — 21 at home and 21 on the road.
Covington’s home opener at Casey Field will be Saturday, June 1, when the Staunton Braves come to town.
The VBL All-Star Game will be held at James Madison University’s Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday, July 7.
The regular season is set to end on Thursday, July 25, with the playoffs beginning on Friday, July 26.
Covington again joins Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Staunton and Harrisonburg in the Valley League’s Southern Division.
Purcellville, New Market, Strasburg, Winchester, Front Royal and Woodstock make up the Northern Division.
The Valley League was founded in 1897 and evolved from a Class D  minor league  to  an NCAA sanctioned league in 1961, operating under NCAA rules. The league adopted wooden bats in 1993.
The Lumberjacks joined the VBL in 2001 and are embarking on their 19th season in the league.
Kotheimer To Return This Summer
Alex Kotheimer, who led the Lumberjacks to their first Southern Division pennant since 2005, will return to Covington as the field manager this summer.
Kotheimer is an assistant coach at West Virginia Tech in Beckley, W.Va.
The Lumberjacks were 28-17 overall during the 2018 season.
