The Alleghany girls have had 17 days to stew on their last outing.
Monday night, they erased the bad memory.
The Mountaineers connected on nine 3-pointers, seven in the opening half, in a 59-28 Three Rivers District whipping of Glenvar.
Maggie Rooklin had four triples and 19 points to lead the winners, while Darcy Ross took care of the inside with a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Bailee Leitch had three treys and nine points, while Vanna Hoke and Gracie Conner both added threes on their way to eight and seven points respectively.
It was a far cry from a disappointing performance and a 63-52 loss at Radford back on December 21, the last game before a long break for the Mountaineers.
“We kind of got back to working on some fundamental stuff over the break,” said AHS coach Jeff Wolfe. “We split practices and the coaches did more one on one work the first week. Then we came back as a team the second week and got some good work in. We had (Alleghany boys JV) coach (Seth) Bradley’s team come in one day so we could work against them. That really helps us.”
Monday night, Alleghany hit five 3-pointers in the opening quarter, including three from Rooklin, as they bolted to a 19-9 advantage.
They stretched the lead to 36-19 at the half and kept pouring it on after the break.
“We have at least five or maybe even six girls that can shoot the three,” Wolfe said. “And most of those tonight came off assists. We moved the ball well.”
Emma Nicely added eight rebounds for the winners with Aysia Massie grabbing six misses.
Olivia Harris had a team-high 16 points for the Highlanders, who dropped to 1-2 in the Three Rivers District and 4-6 overall.
Alleghany (1-1 TRD, 9-2 overall) continues a busy four-game week with home games against James River on Wednesday and Carroll County on Friday before a Saturday morning clash with Rockbridge County at the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout in Lexington.
The Mountaineer jayvees stayed unbeaten on the year at 9-0 with a 46-34 win in Monday’s preliminary.
Kendell Keene scored 17 points for Alleghany to lead the way, Averi Phillips had nine and Emalee Phillips scored eight.
Makenzie Kimberlin with six and Zamera Hayslett, Makayla Crowder and Emma Williams with two completed the AHS?scoring.
Kaelon Thompson had 14 for Glenvar.
The Mountaineers led 24-16 at the half.
