The girls from Alleghany and Floyd County have become quite familiar with each other over the past three nights.
In five more days, they will likely meet up once again.
Friday at Mountaineer Gym, Alexis Hiser scored 22 points, while Chloe Boothe splashed five 3-pointers on her way to 17 more as the Buffaloes held off a furious Mountaineer rally in the final quarter for a 66-57 Three Rivers District victory.
Floyd County, who won a 45-43 home contest with Alleghany on Monday, will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s TRD tournament.
An Alleghany win at James River on Tuesday in their regular season finale would send the Mountaineers back to Floyd County on Wednesday night.
“Floyd County is a good basketball team, but we can play with them,” said AHS?coach Jeff Wolfe. “We proved it over the last couple nights. Now, we need to take care of business on Tuesday and try and go down there and get the job done on Wednesday.”
The Buffaloes lead stretched to 24 Friday before the Mountaineers rallied to cut it to seven late.
Maggie Rooklin had 13 of her team-high 17 points in the final period.
But it was the work of Wolfe’s bench that keyed the comeback.
“I’m really proud of the way we came back,” said Wolfe. “And we had some girls come off the bench and really step up for us tonight.”
Bailee Leitch scored nine points, while Aysia Massie added seven points and Gracie Conner scored six for the Mountaineers, who saw their record dip to 5-6 in the TRD, 14-7 overall.
The Alleghany jayvees defeated Rockbridge County on Thursday, 42-34, before losing a hard fought 38-35 match-up with Floyd County on Friday.
Kendell Keene scored 16 in the victory over the Wildcats.
Averi Phillips scored seven, Emalee Phillips and Emma Williams had five each, Zamera Hayslett scored four, Makenzie Kimberlin had three and Alyssa Taylor scored two.
Averi Phillips led the way on Friday with 12 points, Keene had eight and Kalin Rice scored five. Kimberlin with four and Hayslett, Emalee Phillips and Williams with two apiece completed the scoring.
