Dorothy Idelia Davis Thompson, 97, of Covington, Virginia departed this life on December 1, 2018 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
She was born in Cass, West Virginia on February 13, 1921, to the late William Davis and Arthalia Jordan Davis Mann.
Dorothy was the sixth of seven children with siblings Viola Davis, Thelma Davis Galloway, John William Davis, Lerleen Davis, Vivian Davis Drew, and Mabel Mann Washington preceding her in death.
Dorothy was educated in the public school system in Covington where she was Valedictorian of her class at Watson High School in 1939.
She attended Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) for two years before returning to Covington to work. Dorothy married Bernard William Thompson, Sr. in 1945 and shared 60 loving years until his death. To this union, two children were born. Dorothy was steadfast and nurturing in her devotion to her children and her home. She is remembered as a loving wife, dedicated mother, and loyal friend.
Dorothy was a lifelong and the oldest living member of First Baptist Church, Covington, Virginia, where she was a faithful member of the Missionary Society. She also enjoyed participating in arts and crafts and cooking programs sponsored by the Alleghany County, Virginia Cooperative Extension Group.
Loving memories will remain in the hearts of her children: Brenda Thompson Hodge (Irvin) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Bernard William Thompson, Jr. of Covington, Virginia; granddaughters: Knashawn Hodge Morales (Vladimir) of Lansdale, Pennsylvania and Knachelle Hodge Favors (Jelani) of Atlanta, Georgia; great-granddaughter, Paris Eva Favors of Atlanta, Georgia; sister-in-law, Leone Thompson of Pikesville, Maryland; lifelong friend, Geraldine Smith of Covington, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
Homegoing services will be held at noon on Saturday, December, 8, at the Historic First Baptist Church, 337 South Lexington Avenue, Covington officiated by the Reverend Dr. Willie L. Cannon, Jr., Pastor. Viewing will precede the services from 11am to 12pm. Interment will immediately follow the services at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
