COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany JV softball team battled through a tough early storm and showed fight late, scoring in the fifth and getting steady defensive effort in a 13-1 loss to Buffalo Gap.
Buffalo Gap jumped out early with a big first inning, using walks, a home run, and a few defensive miscues to build a quick lead. Lindsay Lyle’s two-run homer and Sydney Sheets’ solo shot highlighted the early damage, as Buffalo Gap took control on the scoreboard.
Alleghany’s defense continued to rotate and compete, with multiple pitchers working through the lineup. Brooklyn Taylor started in the circle, followed by Kardyn Skidmore and Kylee Armentrout, each taking on innings against a disciplined Buffalo Gap offense. Despite the pressure, Alleghany kept competing on every pitch and worked through several long at-bats.
Offensively, the Cougars broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Chessie Wolfe sparked the inning with a single to center, and Savanna Hicks came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Paelynn Osborne, putting Alleghany on the board and showing late-game execution.
Defensively, Alleghany also flashed clean moments in the field, including a caught stealing in the fifth inning that cut down a Buffalo Gap runner and ended a threat on the bases.
Buffalo Gap added late runs to close it out, but Alleghany continued to respond with effort in the field and persistence at the plate through the final outs.
