WAYNESBORO, Va. (VR) – Alleghany Junior Varsity Cougars produced a balanced offensive attack and overwhelming early innings to secure a dominant win over Waynesboro, with nearly every spot in the lineup contributing to the scoring surge.
Alleghany struck first in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on a Waynesboro error and timely execution. Zane George drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Joel Bradshaw added an RBI single. Ben Skidmore reached on an error that also pushed across a run, helping Alleghany take early control while Lennox Webb struck out multiple hitters on the mound in the opening frame.
The second inning turned into a breakout inning for Alleghany, as the Cougars scored in double figures and batted through the order with consistent contact and plate discipline. Bronson Shinault delivered extra-base production, including a double, while Talin Raether added a triple that drove in runs. Skidmore also contributed with multiple hits, including a single and a double, finishing with at least two hits and RBI production. Carson Cosby reached base multiple times, finishing with hits and walks while scoring and driving in runs as part of the rally.
Alleghany’s lineup depth showed throughout the inning as multiple players reached base via walks, including Hayden Wolfe and Landen Boone, while runners advanced on wild pitches, passed balls, and defensive miscues. The Cougars also benefited from dropped third strikes and catcher interference, extending innings and creating additional RBI chances. By the end of the second inning, Alleghany had built a commanding lead behind a mix of singles, extra-base hits, and patience at the plate.
Alleghany continued to add on in the third inning, again generating runs through a combination of hits and situational execution. Talin Raether added another RBI with a base hit, while Skidmore continued to stay productive at the plate. The Cougars kept traffic on the bases with walks drawn by multiple hitters and maintained pressure by moving runners into scoring position consistently.
Defensively and on the mound, Alleghany limited Waynesboro’s opportunities early. Webb recorded multiple strikeouts across his outing, while later pitchers and defensive substitutions helped maintain control. The Cougars handled infield chances and limited extended rallies, even as Waynesboro managed a few hits and walks in the middle and late innings.
Alleghany’s offense finished with production spread across the lineup, including multiple players recording hits, RBIs, runs scored, and walks. Shinault, Raether, Skidmore, Cosby, Bradshaw, Wolfe, Boone, and George all factored into the offensive output, with several players reaching base multiple times. Extra-base hits from Raether (triple), Shinault (double), and Skidmore (double), combined with a steady stream of singles and walks, drove the Cougars’ run total.
Waynesboro added some offense late, but Alleghany’s early scoring margin proved decisive. The Cougars’ combination of consistent contact hitting, aggressive baserunning, and depth throughout the batting order resulted in a comprehensive team win built on sustained pressure across multiple innings.
