SALEM, Va. (VR) – Covington Middle School girls piled up points in every phase, finishing second with 89 behind a balanced attack of 10 top-three finishes and wins in five events on Wednesday.
The Cougars swept key relays, winning the 4×800 (11:37.08) and 4×100 A (57.58). The 4×100 B added fourth (1:02.98). In the 4×400, Covington doubled up with a second-place A team (5:30.38) and third-place B team (5:35.50), accounting for four relay scoring finishes.
Journee Tate factored into four first-place efforts, taking the 100 (13.75), long jump (12-08.00), triple jump (21-10.00), and running on the winning 4×100. She added a runner-up finish in the 200 (29.45). Kinley Uzzell added another multi-event load: first in the 200 (29.24), first in high jump (4-06.00), third in the 100 hurdles (20.02), and fourth in the 100 (14.05).
In the 400, Covington packed the middle with four straight scorers: Carlea Weikle (3rd, 1:15.80), Gia Ross (4th, 1:17.61), Kierra Wallace (5th, 1:18.52), and Mia Holyman (6th, 1:19.83). The 300 hurdles added three more scorers—Danica Simon (3rd, 1:00.14), Anabelle Williams (5th, 1:06.36), and Alaiya Archer (7th, 1:17.05).
Distance points were steady: Daisy Hodges placed second in the 800 (3:04.09) and fourth in the 1600 (7:09.34). Kaylee Snook took fifth in the 1600 (7:13.71), while Emily Hobbs (10th, 8:09.18) and Ross (10th, 3:31.53 in the 800) added depth finishes.
Field events produced multiple podium stacks. In high jump, Uzzell (1st, 4-06.00), Mariah Skidmore (2nd, 4-04.00), and Aubrey Byer (3rd, 4-02.00) went 1-2-3. In triple jump, Tate (1st) and Simon (2nd, 25-05.00) doubled up. The long jump added five scorers: Tate (1st), Taniya Peterson (5th, 11-08.00), Jayden Dawson (7th, 11-01.00), Malice Nanney (8th, 11-00.00), and Gwen Halterman (9th, 10-10.00).
In throws, Taryn Scott scored in both events—second in discus (62-03) and fifth in shot put (24-07.00). Chloe Goode added eighth in both discus (48-09) and shot put (21-03.00).
Covington totaled points in sprints, distance, hurdles, relays, and all three field areas, finishing with five wins, multiple podium sweeps, and scoring depth across 15 events.
