The Covington City School Board approved unanimously to appoint two members as representatives to a newly formed group that will discuss a merger between the Covington City and Alleghany County Public School systems during a special called meeting held Thursday night.
Chairman Eddy Clemons and member Tonya Jones were appointed  to represent the Covington School Board on the joint committee.
The request to form the group came from the Alleghany County School Board.
Alleghany County School Board member Jacob Wright was in attendance at this meeting and was needing to know whether or not the Covington City School Board would be putting two members on the merger group before discussions could begin.
Once the group has all of its members, it will consist of eight individuals.
With Clemons and Jones, there are now eight individuals committed to take part in the merger discussion group.
The group will also include Covington Mayor Tom Sibold and Councilman Allan Tucker (Covington City Council); Wright and Gerald Franson (Alleghany County School Board), and Matt Garten and James Griffith (Alleghany County Board of Supervisors).
Following the public portion of the meeting, the school board went into closed session to discuss personnel items.
No action was taken at the conclusion of the closed session.
