COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Junior Varsity baseball used a late offensive surge to defeat Staunton River 10–6, breaking open a tight game with an eight-run sixth inning after trailing 4–2.
Staunton River struck first with a four-run fourth inning, stringing together a double, a single, a sacrifice fly and multiple walks, while also capitalizing on an Alleghany error to extend the frame. The rally gave Staunton River a 4–0 advantage before the Cougars began to chip away.
Alleghany responded in the fifth inning. Joel Bradshaw delivered a key RBI single, while Bronson Shinault and Carson Cosby helped keep pressure on the basepaths with additional hits and baserunning that trimmed the deficit to 4–2. The Cougars continued to work counts and reach base, setting the stage for a decisive inning.
The bottom of the sixth proved to be the turning point. Alleghany sent a steady stream of hitters to the plate and used a combination of walks, singles, hit-by-pitch situations and Staunton River defensive miscues to produce eight runs in the frame. Hayden Wolfe, Zane George and Carson Cosby each contributed base hits during the rally, while additional runs crossed on bases-loaded walks, errors and timely situational hitting. The inning allowed Alleghany to turn a two-run deficit into a 10–4 lead.
Staunton River attempted a response in the seventh, adding two runs behind a mix of singles, an error, a dropped third strike situation and a double, but the Cougars limited further damage to close out the 10–6 victory.
