SALEM — Covington’s T.K. Tomlinson won a pair of regional titles, while Mitchell Tallman captured a third in school-record fashion at the Class 1/2 Region C indoor track meet at Roanoke College Friday.
The two led the Cougars to a third place finish behind Auburn and Floyd County.
“Earlier in the year I thought we had a shot at second, but Floyd really came on,” said CHS coach Ray Sullins. “And Auburn is always strong. To finish third as a second-year program, that’s pretty impressive I think.”
Tomlinson was also pretty impressive Friday.
The junior transfer from Jamaica leaped 20 feet, 10 inches in his first long jump of the day and streaked to a 6.63 winning time in the 55 meter dash.
“T.K. had a great day,” said Sullins. “He unloaded a big long jump and basically ended that competition. And his 55 time is the best 1A/2A time in the state. When he gets up to speed, he’s really fast.”
Tallman, just a freshman, erased the Covington school record in winning the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 4 inches.
“It’s amazing considering how little pole vault practice we get,” said Sullins. “Mitchell was vaulting 9-6 at the end of outdoor last season and he’s already at 12-4. So he’s improved almost three feet without the benefit of a (home) pole vault pit.”
Other point scorers for the Cougars included Austin Angle with a fourth in the high jump and a sixth in the 500 meters, Luke Fisher with a fourth in the pole vault, Marvin Harvey with a fifth in the pole vault and a sixth in the 55 meter hurdles and Ethan Forbes with a sixth in the 3,200.
Evan Rose, Tallman, Tomlinson and Harvey also finished sixth in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
The Cougars qualified seven athletes for the combined Class 1 and Class 2 state championship meet.
The meet was originally scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, but has been postponed to Monday, February 25 and Tuesday, February 26 at Roanoke College.
