The Alleghany Highlands Community Services, Alleghany Highlands Healthy Youth Coalition and Covington City Police Department are partnering to install a permanent medication drop box.
An opening day event will be held on Monday, Feb. 18, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Covington City Police Department, located at Covington City Hall.
Medication drop boxes are a safe way for individuals to dispose of expired, unused or unwanted medication such as antibiotics, contraceptives, prescription pain killers and over-the-counter medicines. These drop boxes help keep the community and environment safe.
Individuals often think that flushing their medicine is a safe disposal option, however, flushed medications have been found in lakes, rivers, and streams. Using these medication drop boxes can also help prevent unused medicine from getting into the wrong hands. The opioid epidemic continues to have a huge impact in Southwest Virginia.
The Covington City Police Department, Alleghany Highlands Healthy Youth Coalition and Alleghany Highlands Community Services recognize the importance of having a safe way to dispose of medications in the community.
“Please join us for the opening day event where freebies, prevention information, medication lock boxes and gun locks will be given out,”?said Chelsea Dunaway, prevention coordinator for the Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board.
The medication drop box will be available after Feb. 18.
The Feb. 18 event is free and open to the public. For more information, call Dunaway at 965-2100, Ext. 133.
The Alleghany Highlands Community Services, Alleghany Highlands Healthy Youth Coalition and the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office recently opened a medication drop box at the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office on Main Street in Covington.
