Virginia Tech Dining Services is a key partner in the university’s effort to reduce food waste. Dining currently sends about 300 tons of food waste and compostable service ware each year to an off-campus composting facility, material that could eventually be processed at the planned facility at Kentland Farm. LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Carnegie Hall has received a $7,500 STEAM Power WV grant from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture & History and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, with additional support from the  Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences, and the Governor’s STEM initiative.
These funds will support Carnegie Classrooms during the spring semester.
Carnegie Classrooms are classroom-based, curriculum-connected and arts-integrated workshops currently offered in Greenbrier and Monroe counties.
The STEAM grant will allow Carnegie Hall to offer additional Carnegie Class-rooms in Monroe County and to expand the program to other counties in south-east West Virginia.
Students engage in a creative process that connects an art form with another subject area to meet evolving learning objectives in both disciplines.
This past year, Carnegie Hall employed 20 local teaching artists to provide 3,005 students with a Carnegie Classrooms experience.
Through the Steam Power WV grant, Carnegie Hall will offer more students the opportunity to experience the arts while also enhancing their understanding of traditional curriculum.  Available subjects will include ceramic-tile making, weaving, astronomy, origami, pottery, kirigami,
Appalachian medicine and weather.
According to Carnegie Hall Education Director Leah Trent, “The STEAM grant allows Carnegie Hall to reach more children in rural counties in southeastern West Virginia. Without this grant we would not be able to offer Carnegie Classroom workshops in these counties. We are looking forward to expanding our educational outreach to Nicholas, Summers and Pocahontas counties.”
She added, “We are thrilled to have the support of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture & History and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation for this important initiative.”
The STEAM Power WV grant is provided with the approval of the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
For more information on Carnegie Classrooms or other educational opportunities at Carnegie Hall, contact Education Director, Leah Trent at 304-645-7917 or email at trent@carnegie hallwv.org.
Carnegie Hall is a nonprofit organization supported by individual contributions, grants and fundraising efforts such as TOOT and the Carnegie Hall Gala. The hall is located at 611 Church Street, Lewisburg. For more information call (304) 645-7917 or visit www.carnegiehallwv.org.
