BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – Earlier today, school administrators and the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office were made aware that a weapon had been brought to the Bedford Elementary School. Staff immediately followed Bedford County Public Schools safety protocols, and the situation was quickly addressed. The item was secured, and the student involved was removed from the classroom setting.
School administration worked closely with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and division leadership to ensure the situation was handled promptly and appropriately. As always, the safety of our students’ staff and citizens remains our top priority. Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers, Investigators, and school staff began to investigate this incident and learned of the origin of the firearm and of those involved with this incident. The location was thoroughly searched utilizing deputies and K-9 Stetson no other firearms or contraband was located.
At the completion of this investigation, one single charge was obtained on Samantha Jeffries and Clydale Moon of Bedford County for violation of 18.2-56.2 (recklessly leave an unsecured firearm so as to endanger the life or limb of a child under the age of 14). Please know that situations involving student discipline are handled in accordance with school division policies and privacy laws, so we are unable to share additional details about the other individuals involved.
Incidents like this serve as an important reminder of the importance of securing your firearms and being responsible gun owners and the role, we all play in keeping our communities, schools and children safe. We encourage families to talk with their children about the importance of not bringing prohibited items to school and to report concerns to a trusted adult if they see or hear something that does not seem right.
No one was injured during this incident and there is no active threat.
