ROANOKE — Kayana Alfred had three hits and drove in six runs, leading Covington to a 19-4 non-district softball win over Roanoke Catholic here Friday.
Shelby Leichter added a two-run inside the park homer in a nine-run fifth inning for the Cougars.
“We started off a little slow, then we started to see some pitches and got some runs on the board,” said CHS coach Tony Taylor. “Last week we moved Kayana (Alfred) behind the plate and she’s been a wall back there. With her arm we’re not giving up extra bases due to steals.
“Isabella (Schooler) had another solid game (pitching) and the offense as a whole did well,” Taylor added.
Reese Myers, Kim Via, Stacy Tacy, Autumn Bostic, Midajah Heighter and Ariel Barber all added two knocks to Covington’s 16-hit attack, while Leichter had one.
Tacy drove in four, Leichter had three RBI and three runs scored and both Heighter and Barber scored three runs apiece for the winners.
Schooler pitched the complete-game victory, allowing just four hits and one earned run. She struck out five and walked five.
Covington (1-2) hosts James Monroe, W.Va., on Monday and plays at William Fleming on Friday.
