Alleghany Puts Five In Region Semifinal Round

ABINGDON — Alleghany advanced five wrestlers to this morning’s championship semifinals Friday at the Class 3, Region D wrestling championships at Abingdon High School.
Victor Goldberg (113), Ethyn Kimberlin (126), Haydon Washburn (132), Zack Silver (145) and Justin Hall (285) all won quarterfinals.
Goldberg was the only winner that had to go the distance, posting a major decision over Luke Kuehler of Hidden Valley.
Washburn and Silver both had pins in the first minute of their quarterfinal matches, while Kimberlin and Hall won by pinfall in the second period.
The five need just one more win — in the semifinals or in the consolation bracket — for a top four finish and a state tournament trip to Salem next week.
Mountaineers Joseph Edwards (120), Ivan Dobbs (152) and Lucas Rogers (160) remain alive in the consolation bracket.
Each must win their first match on Saturday to advance to the state tournament.
Wrestling began this morning at 10 a.m.
