COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Covington Volunteer Fire Department held its 124th annual banquet Saturday, recognizing members, reviewing the department’s yearly activity and swearing in officers.
The evening included recognition of retired and honorary members, including Ryan Jeter and Ricky Fridley, who were thanked for their continued support of the department.
Outgoing Chief Andrew Baker, who has served in the role for the past eight years, was recognized for his leadership. C.W. Smith was sworn in by Covington City Mayor, Fred Forbes. Several awards were awarded in various categories including top Call Responder of the Year — Wes Walker.
Fire prevention programs reached more than 600 children through local school programs and station visits. Six smoke detectors were also installed through a partnership with the American Red Cross.
The Fred Jester Memorial Award, established in 2012 to recognize outstanding service to the department and community, was presented to Ron Brunetti. Brunetti joined the department in 2009 and remained active until his retirement in 2019.
The department, organized in 1902, continues to serve residents of Covington and Alleghany County through volunteer fire and emergency services.
