Overtime was the theme Tuesday night on Mountaineer Field.
Both the varsity girls and varsity boys match-ups between Alleghany and James River went extra minutes.
And the Knights found a way to win both.
River stopped the Mountaineer girls, 2-1, while the Knight boys were 4-3 victors.
Alleghany’s score in the opener came on a cross by Julia Bryant and a finish by Carlee Lanford that tied the match.
Megan Hill scored both goals for James River (6-1 TRD, 8-2-1 overall), including the game-winner in second-half stoppage time.
Emma Williams had 11 saves for the Mountaineers (3-5 TRD, 5-6-1 overall).
“I am proud of the girls,” said AHS?coach Bob Donnan. “Emma had a point-blank stop in the first half and the back defensive line of Hope Arthur, Briana Ryder, Annie Fu and Gabriella Pichette handled a fast James River team well for most of the game.”
The Alleghany boys got two goals from Roberto Juarez and one from Erik Honaker in their overtime nightcap loss.
“It was a tough loss, we deserved to win,” said AHS coach Jose Aragones. “We missed two penalties, one of them in the overtime, and finally lost. It’s the first time though that we started playing like we want to. No regrets.”
Alleghany is now 0-7 in the Three Rivers District and 3-9 overall.
Both the Mountaineer girls and boys teams will be at Carroll County tonight.
