HARRISONBURG, Va. (VR) – Nick Powell and Carter Nicely each claimed individual titles Saturday as Alleghany finished third at the Class 3, Region C championships at Rocktown High School. Alleghany qualified four wrestlers for next week’s state tournament. Jayvon Myers and Parker Osborne joined the two champions in advancing. Powell dominated the 106-pound bracket, improving to 35-2 on the season. He capped his day with a 15-0 technical fall over Walker McCrady of East Rockingham High School in the finals.
Nicely stayed unbeaten at 40-0. Wrestling at 175 pounds, he recorded three pins, including a 73-second fall over Frank Lukanich of Brookville High School in the championship match. Myers (30-12) placed second at 190 pounds, going 3-1. He dropped a 6-0 decision to Eli Morris of Waynesboro High Schooll in the title bout. Osborne (35-4) battled back after a semifinal loss, pinning Wyatt Shaffner of Turner Ashby to finish third.
Hayden Wolfe (126) and Hayden Wills (132) both placed fifth and will serve as state alternates. Turner Ashby won the team title with 181 points. Rocktown finished second with 169.5, and the Cougars totaled 139.5 for third place.
