Goals were hard to come by on a chilly Tuesday night at the Jackson River Sport Complex.
Travis Fridley, Roberto Juarez and Michael Pichette were able to find the net, leading Alleghany to a 3-0 area win over Covington.
Fridley gave the Mounties a 1-0 lead with a first half header that came seconds after a Juarez corner kick. Alleghany had 12 corners in the first half.
Juarez added a second-half goal following a Cougar turnover, while Pichette finished the scoring in the final 10 minutes.
Alleghany had chances to tack on more, but Juarez hit the left post twice in the second half and Honaker hit the same post and the crossbar.
A Pichette shot hit the top of the goal in the first half.
“Four, I counted four,” said AHS coach Jose Aragones. “The post is part of the game. If you hit the post it is not in. We have to work on taking advantage of our chances. We didn’t do a good job on that today.”
Mountaineer keeper Dylan Burton shut out Covington, stopping four shots on goal.
A Terran Baker header off a Jacob Roldan corner just missed high in the second half for the Cougars’ best scoring chance.
“I was much more impressed with the second half,” said CHS?coach Heather Baker. “We had a good halftime talk. My objective is for them to get to the ball first. We’re still struggling with that. I definitely think that we could have done better when we had some advantages, some opportunities. I’m trying to figure out what to do about that.”
Jadyn Davis was the first half keeper for the Cougars and Luke Fisher worked the second half.
Alleghany (2-2) hosts Radford in their Three Rivers District opener on Monday, while the Cougars (0-3) are back on the field tonight at Auburn.
