The Alleghany Retired Teachers’ Association met May 5 at Mountain View Restaurant.
President Becky Smith welcomed everyone and introduced the speaker, Doug Jones, Workforce Program coordinator at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.
Jones talked to the group about the changes at Dabney Lancaster. He explained that the college has partnered with 36 colleges and universities like Mary Baldwin University. This means the college has a guaranteed admission agreement, and if the right level of a class is taken, transferable to afour year college or university.
Jones also talked about some of the programs, such heating and air conditioning and a heath care program like CNA, offered at the college. He discussed mailing catalogues throughout  the area to reach more people and to inform residents what the college has to offer.  Dabney is not just for people out of high school. It is for people of any age.
Smith conducted the business meeting and thanked the speaker for his presentation.
Margaret Sams presented the minutes from the last meeting and they were approved as submitted.  Next, Karen Brown read the treasurer’s report and it was approved.
A report was given on the Virginia Retired Teachers Association delegate meeting in Richmond by  Brown. She encouraged everyone to attend the District “P” meeting which was held May 21 in Roanoke.
Donna Vaughn installed the ARTA officers for the 2019-2020.
Officers for the upcoming year will be Joan Green, president; Anita Rice, vice president; Margaret Sams, secretary; and Renee Warren, treasurer.
Smith thanked the outgoing officers and everyone that had been on committees for their hard work the past four years. She presented each of the officers with a thank you gift.
Green thanked and presented Brown and  Smith with an azalea bush for their work as officers in the ARTA.
Dewey Lawson offered the blessing and everyone enjoyed the buffet lunch which includes two kinds of barbeque, rolls, cole slaw, chicken salad, potato salad, and dessert.
The next meeting will be September 3. All school personnel welcome at the meetings.
For more information on the ARTA, contact Green at (540) 962-5410.
