COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – City crews are preparing for the pending winter storm, with Covington Public Works set to begin overnight operations to keep roads passable.

Public Works Director Anthony Lowry said the department has stocked approximately 200 tons of salt mix ahead of the storm. Crews will begin work at 6 p.m. tonight and remain on duty until 6 a.m., followed by a second shift running from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additional staff will be available as needed.

Lowry said the city will deploy five pickup trucks equipped with snow plows and salt spreaders to focus on secondary streets, while two dump trucks with plows and spreaders will concentrate on primary roads. Mechanics will also be on duty during operations to address any mechanical issues that arise.

Plowing efforts will focus on the period of active snow and sleet, with road treatment increasing as conditions begin to ease.

Public Works officials are asking residents to be mindful of crews and equipment and, if possible, to keep vehicles off roadways to allow for safer travel and more efficient snow removal.
