Andrew Czech has slugged his way to a huge summer in Staunton.
He continued his power show Saturday night at Casey Field.
Czech, a rising senior at Walsh University, gave the Braves the lead with a two-run, third-inning homer and Reid Celata (UMBC) and Tanner James (Roanoke) shut down Covington over the final five innings in a 5-2 Staunton win Saturday night.
Czech has homered eight times and drove in 38 runs this season.
The Lumberjacks have lost eight of their last 11.
“It’s been a difficult stretch,” said Jacks head coach Alex Kotheimer. “Tonight, I thought we brought a little more energy, but we just didn’t get it done.”
Domenic Boselli (George Washington) had two hits for the Jacks, including his team-high third homer of the season.
Joe Fortin (Rhode Island) also had two hits for Covington, who fell to 13-13 with the loss.
Grant Vurpillat (New Jersey Tech) allowed three runs over 3.2 innings before a 37-minute lightning delay ended his night.
The Lumberjacks return home tonight to face Front Royal, travel to New Market on Wednesday and are back at Casey Field on Thursday against Purcellville.
All-Star Game
Sunday’s VBL All-Star Game in Harrisonburg was cut short because of storms.
The Southern Division stars led the North 1-0 after three and half innings when the game was stopped.
Lumberjack Calyb King (West Virginia Tech) pitched a scoreless second inning for the South.
Boselli was 0-for-2, while Amiss was 0-for-1.
