Dear Editor,
I have enjoyed being a “contributing writer” for the Virginian Review during these past four years.
When my husband and I moved to Covington, I was happy to discover your local paper, and it has been wonderful to see how the paper has grown in these four years.
I have always valued the place that a local newspaper serves in a community, as it provides information and human interest from a local area. My mom wrote a column for years, in her local newspaper in South Dakota, and her inspiration stays with me.
Through the Virginian Review, I learned a bit about the history of this area. I discovered interesting shops and unique restaurants. We found out about the free summer concerts, and we heard some amazing local musicians.
Through the Review, we learned of so many of the special annual events and traditions that make up this community, and it was good to be a part of it. The word puzzles and comics are fun entertainment, and it was a thrill to meet the cartoonist John Rose in your office one day, as he talked about his process in working on the “Barney Google” and “Snuffy Smith” comic strip.
The Virginian Review really helped us feel connected here, and I applaud this fantastic local newspaper.
Sincerely,
Gayle Urban – Scottland Road, Covington

Dear Editor,
Sovereign immunity is a legal doctrine by which the state cannot commit a legal wrong and is immune from civil or criminal prosecution.
I?found this out when the trash truck all but recently destroyed my car on a Thursday on my street.
I?was preparing to take my grandchildren to school and daycare. Thankfully, I was running behind. If not, my granddaughter and I?would have been crushed beside the car.
The excuse from the driver who backed up was that his “mirrors were wiggly.”
The impact pushed the rear of my car two feet from its parking spot. The right tires were pushed into the curb; the driver’s door was side swiped and the left front bumper was destroyed.
My insurance incurred a $4,000 debt. I?had to pay a $250 deductible and my insurance rate will rise.
After talking to city officials, I?found out I would get no help from anyone. Why wouldn’t the city, county trash driver be held accountable?
I?wonder how many others in this town have faced the horrors I?have had?
Sovereign immunity??Going back to the days of the crown? No liability?
Sincerely,
Brenda Wright – E. Walnut Street, Covington

Dear Editor,
All I?can say is,”?Wow!”
The steps behind Jack Mason’s Tavern and Rose Street parking lot in Clifton Forge are a tribute to Karen Thomas’ Art Club at Clifton Middle School, the Corridor Curb Appeal Committee and volunteers from the community.
What a wonderful town!
Sincerely,
Bari Ballou – Linden Avenue, Clifton Forge
