CLIFTON FORGE — The Clifton Forge Public Library’s Brown Bag Book Club will meet Thursday, May 16, to discuss the No. 1 New York Times bestseller, “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens.
Set in the 1950’s and 1960’s, the story revolves around Kya Clark, a young girl who lives in an extremely rural area of North Carolina.
Known locally as the Marsh Girl, Kya is a sensitive and intelligent person who has survived alone in her marsh world, making friends with the gulls and learning lessons from the sand. The need for people and specifically for love eventually brings her into contact with the larger world beyond her marsh.
Kya is ready for a new life — until the unthinkable happens and Kya becomes the primary suspect.
Amazon writes, “Where the Crawdads Sing” is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.”
The New York Times Book Review calls it “a painfully beautiful first novel.”
The Brown Bag Book Club meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in the library’s Michael Armstrong Community Room.
New members are always welcome.
Participants are encouraged to bring a friend and to bring a lunch. Dessert will be provided.
