William Fleming used a pair of five-run innings to get the job done at the Jackson River Sport Complex Friday.
The Colonels belted 11 hits and took advantage of five Covington errors to post a 13-2 six-inning, non-district softball win.
Reese Myers, Kim Via, Kayana Alfred, Christen Holloway, Midajah Heighter, Isabella Schooler and Ariel Barber all had one hit apiece for the Cougars.
Covington scored both of their runs in the first inning when Myers walked, Via and Holloway both had base hits and Stacy Tacy and Heighter were both hit by pitches.
“We had opportunities to score in every inning, we just couldn’t get the hit when we needed to — we left a lot of runs on the bases,” said Cougar coach Tony Taylor. “Errors bit us early. We gave up eight runs after having two outs in a few innings.”
Tacy made two big plays in center field to prevent further damage.
Isabella Schooler gave up five earned runs and walked six in the circle.
Covington (2-3 Pioneer, 4-9 overall) goes to Craig County this afternoon.
“We have to regroup quickly,” Taylor finished. “We’ve got to go to Craig County tomorrow and have four games next week.”
