ROANOKE — Camp Carilion is now accepting applications from rising eighth- and ninth-graders who are interested in a future career in health care.
The four-day event features visits to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Jefferson College of Health Sciences.
At each of these locations, students have the opportunity for career exploration through hands-on exercises and interactive demonstrations.
The camp is designed to prepare the future health care workforce by introducing adolescents to a variety of health care careers, particularly careers with which they may not already be familiar.
The goal is to ensure students who attend camp are more interested in health care careers at the end of the week.
Promoting health care careers at the middle school level allows students to prepare by taking necessary high school classes and planning for college.
To be eligible for camp, students must:
— Have a strong desire to learn about health care careers.
— Have his/her own transportation.
— Have one recommendation from a school official.
— Must write a paragraph titled, “Why I Am Interested in this Camp.”
The Application deadline is Friday, April 12, and there is a $50 registration fee to attend. An application can be downloaded at www.carilionclinic.org/path-file/390.
