Welding students from Jackson River Technical Center competed in the 2019 SkillsUSA district welding competition, held Friday, Jan. 25, at New River Community College in Dublin.
Approximately 15 welding students were present from schools within the district, which includes Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem City, Floyd County, Giles County, Botetourt County, Pulaski County and JRTC.
The contest consisted of submitting a resume, taking a written knowledge test, and building a project from blueprints that were provided.
Students worked with all welding processes and were required to weld in various positions.
Contestants from JRTC were Ryan Whiting, first place; and Jacob Byer third place.
Whiting will now move on and compete in the Skills USA state competition, which will be held Friday, April 12, in Virginia Beach.
Earlier in the year Whiting, Byer, and Kyle Dunbar competed in the annual American Welding Society contest, held at the Giles County Technology Center.
At this event Byer finished third, while Whiting and Dunbar tied for fifth.
