ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is excited to announce that the 2026 It’s Uniquely Alleghany! Calendars are now available for purchase. Each year, the Chamber hosts its annual photo contest to celebrate the natural beauty, community spirit, and unique charm of the Alleghany Highlands.

This year marked the 14th Annual It’s Uniquely Alleghany! Photo Contest, which drew over 70 entries from both local and visiting photographers. Participants of all experience levels—from amateur hobbyists to professionals—were encouraged to submit up to seven images that showcase what makes our region truly special.

“We’re always inspired by the incredible talent and creativity of those who participate,” said Josh Taylor, Executive Director of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism. “The images submitted each year capture the beauty and spirit of the Alleghany Highlands in ways that remind us how fortunate we are to call this place home.”

This year’s Grand Prize Winner is Darren Seay for his photo titled “Sunset on the Dock”. His stunning image of Lake Moomaw, with the sun dipping behind the mountains, will grace the cover of the 2026 calendar. Darren has been a lifelong resident of Covington and the Alleghany Highlands, where his love for photography began with a simple 35mm camera his father gave him as a teenager. Over the years, that hobby turned into a true passion—especially with the shift to digital photography, which opened up new creative possibilities. He enjoys capturing the region’s wildlife and landscapes and credits the encouragement of friends and family for keeping him inspired.

Additional featured photographers include Bonnie Keyser, Christian Filips, Donna Rhodes, Gavin Dressler, Greg Persinger, Jennifer Simpson, Maria Creasey, Maurice Fliess, and Tripp Curry. The winning images highlight the scenic landscapes, local landmarks, and moments that make our area “Uniquely Alleghany.”

The contest also featured a special “Chamber Christmas Card” category. This year’s winner is Gavin Dressler with his wintery photo “A Dusting of Snow”.

This year’s calendar is dedicated to the memory of local photographer, Jada Callender, who participated in every It’s Uniquely Alleghany! Photo Contest since its beginning. Jada had an incredible eye for capturing the heart and beauty of the Alleghany Highlands, and her passion and creativity left a
lasting mark on our community. A special dedication page honoring her can be found in the back of the 2026 calendar.

The It’s Uniquely Alleghany! calendars have become a local favorite over the past decade and make wonderful holiday gifts. The 2026 calendar is available now for $15 at the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Visitors Center (located in the Mallow Mall/Highland Centre) and
Livy’s Closet in Downtown Clifton Forge.

“Each year we’re so grateful for the community’s enthusiasm and support,” said Makayla Nobles, Events & Special Projects Coordinator. “These calendars truly showcase the beauty and heart of the Alleghany Highlands, and we encourage everyone to start capturing their photos now for next year’s contest!”
