Alleghany’s girls soccer team tied a school record at Mountaineer Field Thursday.
They’re looking for more.
Regan Meadows’ goal in the 59th minute was the only score of the match in Alleghany’s 1-0 win over Glenvar.
Not only did the victory turn the tables on a 3-1 loss to the Highlanders on Wednesday, but it also gave the Mounties five wins, equaling the 2014 team’s school record for victories in a season.
Alleghany is now 3-4 in the Three Rivers District and 5-5-1 overall.
“I’m really proud of the team’s effort,” said AHS coach Bob Donnan. “Everybody stepped it up tonight. It’s a hard thing to come back and play a team right after you just played them the night before.
“Regan’s goal was particularly strong — it was just a beautiful shot,” he added. “We had a couple near misses that we would have really like to have gone in.”
Freshman keeper Emma Williams posted her fourth shutout of the season, stopping 18 shots from the Highlanders (5-4 TRD, 6-5-1 overall).
“Our defense was really strong tonight,” Donnan finished.
In the nightcap of the rain-delayed doubleheader, the Glenvar boys stopped Alleghany, 3-1.
The Highlanders led 1-0 at the half on a penalty kick.
David Donnan scored the lone Alleghany goal of the game in the 57th minute, tying the match at 1-all.
But Glenvar (7-1 TRD, 9-1-1 overall) finished the scoring with goals in the 61st and 73rd minute.
“It was a hard game,” said Alleghany coach Jose Aragones. “We played them yesterday and we played very bad. Today, we had a different plan — we switched things. It worked in the first half until a PK. Referee made a mistake — we all make mistakes. That PK was a mistake. It kind of changed our game.”
The Mountaineer boys fell to 0-6 in the TRD and 3-8 overall.
Both the AHS boys and girls will host James River on Tuesday at Mountaineer Field.
