LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) — Winter is coming, and Alleghany Highlands Public Schools is prepared. Safety is the school division’s top priority, and families and staff will receive clear, timely information whenever bad weather hits.
“We’ll try to make quick decisions using reliable weather data and communicate them clearly so everyone can plan ahead,” savid Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS.
All AHPS schools will follow the same schedule during snow days or weather delays, eliminating confusion about which schools are open or closed. In most cases, schools will not switch to virtual learning unless necessary to meet the state’s instructional requirements. After-school sports and
activities are typically managed by individual schools, but any system-wide cancellations will be communicated promptly.
Families and staff will be notified through multiple channels. The first place to check is the AHPS website and social media — Facebook and Instagram. Local and regional news outlets will also receive updates as soon as decisions are made. Families and employees will receive text messages and automated calls, though calls will not be made between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Any overnight decisions will be posted online immediately.
A fact sheet with detailed information about AHPS weather closing procedures is posted on the school division’s website, ahps.k12.va.us.
AHPS is committed to keeping the process simple, predictable, and transparent, so families and employees can stay safe and informed all winter long. Serving nearly 2,700 students in the Alleghany Highlands, AHPS provides quality education in a safe, supportive environment.
